    Experience:

It was the summer of 2002 and I had no idea what to expect as I headed in for the first day of my internship at Kingsmill Resort.  At 5:45a.m., I walked in the front door of the golf and landscape building and made my way to the break room that first morning to find the crew that I would be working with for the next three months.  Most of the guys were struggling to stay awake as they waited for their morning assignments.  Once the superintendent read off the assignments, the once half-asleep crew staggered to life as they headed off to their various jobs.  I hopped in a Carry-All with a fellow crew member who was fortunate enough to receive the same assignment as I, raking bunkers.  As we worked through the morning, we engaged in small talk in an attempt to get to know each other.  Gradually, throughout the rest of the week, I got to know all my fellow co-workers, as well as the four other interns, who became my best buds in no time.  It is no surprise that we interns grew so close, considering we worked side by side for countless hours in the unrelenting heat.  Throughout the rainless summer, we were protégés of the superintendent, learning what it takes to manage a golf course. It is impossible for me to convey all that was learned in those three months at Kingsmill.  However, in the midst of the sodding, hand-watering, aerifying, and weekly meetings came all of the key lessons that truly made my summer an outstanding learning experience.
